Project Description

My project is pretty straightforward. It has an opening page, and then a biography and this project description. The biography tells all about his life and when he wrote some of his works, such as The Raven, and Tamerlane. His life was dark and odd. He was a heavy alcoholic, as you may have noticed, and was all over many different women. The biography explains about where he lived, his many different affairs, and his many different magazine ventures. In a strange way his life was good. He was married and held jobs for extensive periods. The only drawbacks were that he was an alcoholic and sometimes didn’t have a job at all. Then there was the fact that he was probably never very happily married assuming his main marriage was to his cousin, once removed. Gross, huh? He also had many engagements that were called off due to drinking or rumors about him and other women. Another big factor in his life was, of course, his writing. His writing styles were like his life. Short and haunted. Some of his others were about love. That would also pertain to his lifestyle. Humor, though, in my eyes, would not be something related to his life. His life is not one that I would picture as humorous.

These ten facts about his life stand out:

  1. He was a gifted writer all his life.
  2. He was a heavy alcoholic.
  3. He lived in many places all over New England.
  4. He went to school in many places also. He went to school in London, Richmond and University of Virginia.
  5. He enlisted in the army twice, once in 1827 and once in 1830.
  6. He experimented with drugs, including opium.
  7. He published his own magazine, The Penn Magazine, later renamed The Stylus.
  8. He disappeared for 5 days before his wedding and his fiancé did not know where he was.
  9. A man found him outside a bar semiconscious.
  10. On Sunday, October 7, 1849, Edgar Allan Poe died. He was 40 years old.

Links

My web page links, I think, are pretty fun to go to. First, there is a timeline of Edgar Allan Poe’s life and works. It tells many important items of his life and when he wrote certain works.

"A really kickin’ picture" was my opinion of the raven on this page. I like the picture of it and how it was shaped. A nice biography follows, too.

"The Poe Museum" takes you to a biography. You can also browse around on things like how to get to the actual Poe Museum.

"Lots of Poems" will take you to a complete online set of Edgar’s poems and other works. It’s not very informative, but it’s the only one I found that had his complete works.

"The Poe Decoder" is an interesting site. It is a group of essays written by different people about his life and/or works.

Last but not least, "E.A.P." This site has it all. Complete works, links, the whole shebang. It has a nice picture of him too.

Technical Details

During the time I was making the project I was also learning HTML code. I made most of my project in Microsoft Word but I can refine my project in script. It helps for colors and refining where certain text goes.

I got my site from Geocities, which gives you a free site as long as you’re 14. My dad signed me up, and one day I came home and found a page all for myself.

It’s pretty fun to write things in code because when you get down to it, it’s quite easy. Once you learn where to put different tags and things, you’re set. HTML is a handy language to have around. Then, when your boss asks you to make and design the company website, you’re like "OK!" rather than, "Ummm…I don’t think I can do that, sir."

I hope you liked my site. It was fun being able to do a website rather than a shoe box diorama.
